{"id":8715584,"date":"2023-01-13T06:04:00","date_gmt":"2023-01-13T14:04:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.eastbaytimes.com\/?p=8715584&#038;preview=true&#038;preview_id=8715584"},"modified":"2023-01-13T06:08:55","modified_gmt":"2023-01-13T14:08:55","slug":"keenan-anderson-cousin-of-black-lives-matter-co-founder-dies-from-cardiac-arrest-after-being-tased-by-la-police","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.eastbaytimes.com\/2023\/01\/13\/keenan-anderson-cousin-of-black-lives-matter-co-founder-dies-from-cardiac-arrest-after-being-tased-by-la-police\/","title":{"rendered":"Keenan Anderson, cousin of Black Lives Matter co-founder, dies from cardiac arrest after being tased by LA police"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"byline\"><strong>By Stella Chan and Elizabeth Wolfe | CNN<\/strong><\/div>\n<p>A 31-year-old father and English teacher died from cardiac arrest last week after he was repeatedly tased by police, according to the Los Angeles Police Department, marking the third officer-involved death in the city this year.<\/p>\n<p>Police encountered Keenan Anderson, who is the cousin of Black Lives Matter <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2021\/05\/28\/us\/black-lives-matter-patrisse-cullors-resigns\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">co-founder Patrisse Cullors<\/a>, on January 3 at the site of a traffic collision in Los Angeles\u2019 Venice neighborhood, police said in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lapdonline.org\/newsroom\/west-traffic-in-custody-death-icd-nrf002-23rc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a news release<\/a> last week.<\/p>\n<p>As police struggled to arrest Anderson, they tased him repeatedly, edited body-worn camera footage released by police shows. After being arrested, Anderson was brought to a local hospital, where he went into cardiac arrest and was pronounced dead, according to police.<\/p>\n<p>Cullors said in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/CnLUOyfrkmh\/?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">an Instagram tribute<\/a> post that her cousin was \u201ckilled by LAPD.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/yyFqKybRu90?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cKeenan deserves to be alive right now, his child deserves to be raised by his father,\u201d Cullors wrote in the post. \u201cKeenan we will fight for you and for all of our loved ones impacted by state violence. I love you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Anderson taught tenth-grade English at Digital Pioneers Academy in Washington, DC, according to a statement from the school\u2019s founder, Mashea Ashton. Anderson was visiting family in Los Angeles over winter break, Ashton said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe details of his death are as disturbing as they are tragic,\u201d Ashton said in the statement, adding, \u201cKeenan was a deeply committed educator and father of a six-year-old son. \u2026 He was beloved by all.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur community is grieving. But we\u2019re also angry. Angry that, once again, a known, loved, and respected member of our community is no longer with us. Angry that another talented, beautiful black soul is gone too soon,\u201d Ashton said.<\/p>\n<p>Detectives from the police department\u2019s Force Investigation Division responded to the scene where Anderson was taken into custody and are investigating the use of force, police said, explaining in the video that the department\u2019s policy defines any death of a person in their custody as a \u201ccategorical\u201d use of force.<\/p>\n<p>So far this year, Los Angeles police are also investigating the police shooting deaths of Takar Smith, 45, and Oscar Sanchez, 35, and has released footage of those incidents.<\/p>\n<h3>What the video shows<\/h3>\n<p>Police said they responded to a traffic collision the afternoon of January 3 and saw Anderson \u201crunning in the middle of the street and exhibiting erratic behavior.\u201d On one officer\u2019s body-worn camera, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=MVTYcbPX0GA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">released and edited<\/a> by police, a woman at the traffic collision site tells police, \u201cI think that guy up there needs help though, because the guy\u2019s trying to run away.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Body-worn camera video shows Anderson initially stopped and spoke to an officer before the video cuts to a text screen that says Anderson \u201cattempted to run away.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When the video resumes, Anderson is seen jogging into the street as the officer pursues him and stops him in a busy intersection, commanding Anderson to lay down on his stomach.<\/p>\n<p>Anderson does not appear to comply immediately, and two other officers arrive and move him to lie prone on his stomach on the street, telling Anderson to \u201crelax.\u201d As officers struggle on top of him, Anderson can be heard screaming, \u201cHelp, they\u2019re trying to kill me\u201d and \u201cPlease, don\u2019t do this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In footage from another responding officer, an officer can be heard repeatedly warning Anderson to stop resisting and turn over, and threatening several times to tase Anderson.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re trying to George Floyd me,\u201d says Anderson, as officers try to roll him onto his stomach.<\/p>\n<p>Then, an officer deploys a taser multiple times on Anderson, who says, \u201cI\u2019m not resisting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Officers eventually handcuff and place ankle hobbles on Anderson, the video shows.<\/p>\n<p>Later in the video, the Los Angeles Fire Department places Anderson, who appears conscious, onto a gurney near an ambulance.
