{"id":8688607,"date":"2022-12-13T10:54:49","date_gmt":"2022-12-13T18:54:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.eastbaytimes.com\/?p=8688607&#038;preview=true&#038;preview_id=8688607"},"modified":"2022-12-13T11:40:34","modified_gmt":"2022-12-13T19:40:34","slug":"covid-19-vaccines-have-saved-more-than-3-million-lives-in-us-study-says-but-the-fight-isnt-over","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.eastbaytimes.com\/2022\/12\/13\/covid-19-vaccines-have-saved-more-than-3-million-lives-in-us-study-says-but-the-fight-isnt-over\/","title":{"rendered":"COVID-19 vaccines have saved more than 3 million lives in US, study says, but the fight isn\u2019t over"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"byline \"><strong>By Jen Christensen | CNN<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The COVID-19 vaccines have kept more than 18.5 million people in the US out of the hospital and saved more than 3.2 million lives, <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.26099\/whsf-fp90\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a new study<\/a> says \u2014 and that estimate is most likely a conservative one, the researchers say.<\/p>\n<p>The US is nearing the second anniversary of its first COVID-19 vaccinations, and although the coronavirus is still causing thousands of illnesses and deaths, the vaccines have made living with the virus more manageable.<\/p>\n<p>To determine exactly how much the shots have helped, researchers from the Commonwealth Fund and Yale School of Public Health created a computer model of disease transmission that incorporated demographic information, people\u2019s risk factors, the dynamics of infection and general information about vaccination.<\/p>\n<p>Their study, published Tuesday, found that without COVID-19 vaccines, the nation would have had 1.5 times more infections, 3.8 times more hospitalizations and 4.1 times more deaths than it did between December 2020 and November 2022.<\/p>\n<script type=\"text\/javascript\" src=\"https:\/\/newsource-embed-prd.ns.cnn.com\/videos\/embed-video-player.min.js\" data-newsource-publisher=\"21905\" data-player-data=\"3a0a5cd9f13578688a6b6c56892c9b9\" data-max-width=\"840\" data-autoplay=\"0\" data-player-type=\"1010\" data-embed-type=\"3020\"><\/script>\n<p>As it stands now, COVID-19 has caused at least 99.2 million cases and more than 1.08 million deaths in the US. Just in the past week, there were 2,981 new deaths and 30,253 new hospital admissions, <a href=\"https:\/\/covid.cdc.gov\/covid-data-tracker\/#datatracker-home\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The study estimates that the vaccinations were also a good financial bet, saving the US $1.15 trillion in medical costs.<\/p>\n<p>If you factor in the cases of long COVID that vaccines likely prevented, the savings may be much higher, according to Alison Galvani, one of the study authors.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGiven the emergency of highly transmissible variants and immune-evading variants like Omicron, it is a remarkable success and an extraordinary achievement,\u201d said Galvani, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.commonwealthfund.org\/person\/alison-p-galvani?redirect_source=\/person\/alison-galvani#:~:text=Alison%20Galvani%2C%20Ph.,Health%2C%20Yale%20School%20of%20Medicine.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">founding director<\/a> of the Yale Center for Infectious Disease Modeling and Analysis.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMoving forward, an accelerating uptake of the new booster will be fundamental to averting future hospitalization and death.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nearly 658 million COVID-19 vaccines have been administered in the United States. However, uptake of the new boosters \u2014 which target the original virus strain as well as the Omicron BA.4\/5 subvariants \u2014 has been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2022\/11\/22\/health\/vaccine-effectiveness-bivalent-boosters-cdc\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">slow<\/a> since they were authorized this fall. Only about 14% of the eligible population has gotten one, and 1 in 5 people in the US are still completely unvaccinated, <a href=\"https:\/\/covid.cdc.gov\/covid-data-tracker\/#vaccinations_vacc-people-booster-percent-pop5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according to the CDC<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/statements-releases\/2022\/11\/22\/fact-sheet-biden-administration-announces-six-week-campaign-to-get-more-americans-their-updated-covid-19-vaccine-before-end-of-the-year\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Biden administration<\/a> has been encouraging more Americans to get boosted, especially with holiday gatherings coming up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t wait. If you wait, you put yourself at risk,\u201d Dr. Anthony Fauci, President Biden\u2019s chief medical adviser and director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease, said Friday at an AARP event. \u201cWe\u2019re entering the colder months of the late fall and the early winter. We\u2019re all going to congregate with our families and friends for the holidays. If you are up to date, great. If you are not, get vaccinated now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>COVID-19 case numbers have been trending upward, as have deaths and hospitalizations, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/covid.cdc.gov\/covid-data-tracker\/#datatracker-home\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CDC. <\/a><\/p>\n<p>About 14% of the US population lives in an area that meets the CDC\u2019s criteria for a \u201chigh\u201d COVID-19 community level, including New York City, Los Angeles County and Maricopa County, Arizona \u2014 a sharp increase from less than 5% last week but far below levels of prior surges. It also suggests wearing one in other public settings in communities where there is a high level of transmission.
